Deja Peavy homeownershipMeet Deja Peavy, a vibrant Milwaukee native who wears multiple hats in her community. By day, she serves as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), responding to calls and providing critical care to those in need. Outside of her demanding job, Deja is a passionate tennis player, finding solace and challenge on the court.

The Decision to Buy a Duplex

Recently, Deja made a significant decision: she purchased a duplex in the Merrill Park neighborhood in the Near West Side. Why a duplex? For Deja, it wasn’t just about finding a place to live—it was about making an impact. She wanted to provide safe, clean, and affordable housing, particularly in a city facing a housing crisis. “I want to stand up against greed,” she says, emphasizing her commitment to ethical housing practices.

Investing in the Near West Side

Deja chose to invest in the Near West Side neighborhood, known for its rich history and diverse community. “I wanted to deepen my roots in the city and invest in a neighborhood that reflects the diversity I value,” she explains. Near West Side Partners (NWSP) played a crucial role in her decision, providing resources and support that helped make her dream of homeownership a reality by providing her with the Homeownership Down Payment Incentive. This is one of the three housing programs NWSP offers.

“NWSP connected me with grants from ACTS Housing and other resources that impacted my down payment,” Deja notes gratefully. “They also introduced me to neighbors and got me involved in community activities, which made me feel welcomed and supported.”

The Importance of Homeownership

For Deja, owning a home represents more than just a financial investment. “It’s about building generational wealth and having roots in the city,” she reflects. “It’s about having something that’s truly my own and contributing positively to the community I care about.”

Looking Toward the Future

When asked about her vision for the future of the Near West Side, Deja is hopeful. “I envision more young Black and people of color owning homes here,” she says with conviction. “I want to see our community grow stronger, more vibrant, and continue to embrace its diversity.”

As Milwaukee continues to evolve, Deja’s story reminds us of the power of individuals to create positive change, one home—and one community—at a time.
