Summer 2019 has been one of our busiest summers to date in the Near West Side. The NWS Farmers Market, “Brats For Your Thoughts” and many other events and meetings have kept the staff busy.

These activities could not take place without the support of Marquette University’s internship program with groups like the Kleczka Internship Program, Burke Scholars and many departments that have worked with NWSP to provide support via internships.

This summer Shalonda Jones (Mueller Communication’s intern) supported NWSPs online brand posting on Facebook, creating press releases and much more. She has been instrumental in working with our team.

In the area of crime and safety, Donald Harris (Marquette University’s

intern) created, led and built from the ground up the NWSP’s Mobile Camera Initiative. Donald researched various systems, developed documentation including a manual for the system.

This year’s Farmers Market changed location from Milwaukee Center For Independence to Harley-Davidson’s campus and another change was adding Morgan Hines (Marquette University), our first Near West Side Farmers Market Intern. She was instrumental in finding vendors, entertainment and keeping track of the many different data points of the market.

Nia Newton was another first, NWSP’s first ever Art Intern. The Evicted Exhibit has elevated the Mobile Design Box gallery and with the support of Melissa Mueller of Quorum and Mo Zell of UWM’s School of Architecture and Urban Planning, NWSP needed the support of an intern with some of the logistics of this high profile exhibit. Nia assisted in training volunteers, installing some of the NWSP related materials and researched grants for the program.

In the past month, the Near West Side Business Improvement District (BID) #10 was invited to participate in the City of Milwaukee’s first ever BID/NID Week Celebration. In supporting these efforts, Dasia Stanley (senior at Riverside High School) was brought on board to develop the agenda, route and details of this multi-neighborhood, multi-BID tour. She was able to develop a foundation to make the tour happen. For more information visit: mkehistoricblackbidtour.eventbrite.com

NWSP also had the opportunity to work with Yadiah Stallworth who assisted with the Choice Neighborhood programming both scribing minutes and assisting with community and resident outreach.

NWSP appreciates the support of our partners in particular Marquette University’s Office of Public Affairs and Karen Hoffman, Associate Director, Les Aspin Center for Government. The support from Marquette University allows NWSP to continue to do the work of making the Near West Side a better place to live, work and play.
