This summer, Near West Side Partners will be hosting a weekly webinar series on Facebook Live each Friday at 2:00 p.m. This week’s webinar was hosted by NWSP’s own Britney Roberson, who was joined by Diane De La Santos and Pamela Smith from City on a Hill.

City on a Hill is a faith-based nonprofit organization located in the Near West Side on N. 22nd Street and Kilbourn Avenue. This organization strives to reduce poverty, strengthen families, and foster racial reconciliation. City on a Hill also provides training to help the wider community understand the causes of poverty, what role race plays in poverty, and how the community can be a part of the solution.

City on a Hill offers a workshop called “Removing Racial Residue” that aims to help participants introspect and reflect on their experiences of racial tensions and brainstorm practical solutions on what steps can be taken to speak up about racial tensions in our communities and change the way racial tensions are institutionalized in our everyday organizations. Ms. Smith describes this workshop as “experiential and participatory” and explained that “it’s important for this [training] to first change our hearts and minds, but if it doesn’t change our organizations and our institutions, nothing changes.”

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, City on a Hill is experimenting with a virtual form of the workshop that will take place over Zoom. If you are interested in partaking in this training or would like to know more about City on a Hill, you can:
