Curated by Dr. Kirk Nickel\, Marc and Lillian Rojtman Curator of European Art\, the show comprises a two-part installation of the exhibition galleries\, in fall 2024 and spring 2025\, and features well over 100 works of art from the museum’s collections. \nRanging widely within time periods\, geographies\, and artists’ careers\, the exhibition highlights major works in the Haggerty’s collection\, organized into six curated galleries each semester. These distinct but conceptually linked spaces reflect the museum’s enduring commitment to the work of modern and contemporary artists\, while also featuring a select group of Renaissance and Baroque artworks. The exhibition draws particular attention to the ideas and impulses that have fueled artists through the recent century\, including novel approaches to modern materials + processes\, political satire\, kinetic and op art\, migration\, photography’s relationship to truth\, mail art\, and the challenge of representing life after war. Artworks by Mark Bradford\, María Magdalena Campos-Pons\, Enrique Chagoya\, LaToya Ruby Frazier\, Jeffrey Gibson\, Sam Gilliam\, Philip Guston\, Keith Haring\, Wifredo Lam\, Elizabeth Murray\, Diego Rivera\, and Richard Serra will appear in the opening installation. Many of the works on view have benefitted from new research and conservation efforts\, shedding additional light on their fabrication and display histories\, and in some cases\, the identity of their maker. \nAt its opening in 1984\, the Haggerty Museum of Art was envisioned both as a repository for Marquette’s collection of fine art and as a center for learning through the visual arts in a way that emphasized necessary connections to other disciplines in the humanities and sciences. Four decades later\, the museum reaffirms that commitment to interdisciplinary connection. The Haggerty’s broad and varied collection is the product of passionate art collectors and supporters in the Milwaukee area and beyond\, to whom we are exceedingly grateful. SUMMARY:Affirmation/Transformation: Fandom Created
DESCRIPTION:Cheeseheads\, Swifties\, Beatlemaniacs\, Trekkies\, Whovians\, Potterheads\, Beyhive\, the Cenation\, ARMY. People are fans of all sorts of things. But what makes someone a fan? Is there a difference between enjoying something and being a fan of that thing? \nAffirmation/Transformation considers “creation” as the line between casual enjoyment and fandom. Fans are not passive; fans create. Using pieces from the Haggerty Museum of Art’s permanent collection\, Affirmation/Transformation looks at the types of things that fans are inspired to create and asks the viewer whether these fan creations are affirmational or transformational—that is\, do they affirm the fan object as it is\, or transform it into something new? Do fan creations uphold the canon of the original content\, or do they take only what they need and leave the rest behind? Is it possible that all fan creations hold both at the same time? \nThis exhibition serves as a foundational component for the dissertation of Kate Rose\, English Literature PhD Candidate at Marquette University. The pieces included in Affirmation/Transformation are available to online fan communities and fans are invited to use them as inspiration in their own affirmational or transformational works. Many of these works will be on display as a part of the exhibition on view at the Haggerty Museum of Art. SUMMARY:Material Muses: Medieval Devotional Culture and its Afterlives
DESCRIPTION:The Middle Ages is often thought of as a period of heightened religious devotion\, especially in the Catholic regions of Western Europe. Looking to the Joan of Arc Chapel at the heart of Marquette’s campus and pulling from the collections of the Haggerty Museum of Art and the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee\, Material Muses: Medieval Devotional Culture and its Afterlives considers how artists since the end of the Middle Ages have looked back toward art from this period as inspiration for creating “authentic” devotional objects into the present day. Material Muses explores the allure of medieval material religion as it converses with and energizes post-medieval religious narratives. \nMaterial Muses was curated by Abby R. Beginning with Walker Evans’ “American Photographs” (1938) and Robert Frank’s “The Americans” (1958)\, road trips have long fueled photographers’ fascination with the American vernacular and social landscape. Focusing on the half-century following the publication of “The Americans”\, the exhibition features the portfolio “American Roads” (1981)\, part of a recent gift of over 150 photographs donated by Richard D. and Kandace A. Riebel. The portfolio brings together work by twenty photographers who variously capture the absurdity\, banality\, beauty\, and horror encountered on the road. Also on view are works by Joel Sternfeld\, Stephen Shore and Alec Soth\, photographers known for traveling throughout the United States and chronicling the people\, places\, and sites along the way. \n“Road Trip!” was curated by Amanda H. SUMMARY:Tomas Saraceno: Entangled Air
DESCRIPTION:For more than two decades Argentina-born\, Berlin-based artist Tomás Saraceno has activated projects aimed towards rethinking the co-creation of the atmosphere with the goal of eliminating carbon emissions. The works in this exhibition speak to Saraceno’s ongoing desire to communicate the extent to which humans\, animals and plants relate to the air. Within this codependent ecosystem\, humans unequally share the air and disproportionately harm the atmosphere: combustion-generated pollutants from burning coal\, oil\, and natural gas have far-reaching impacts on public health and climate change. \nRather than using the term Anthropocene to describe how humankind has become a geological force\, Saraceno invokes the term Capitalocene—or the social and ecological result of the exploitation of resources and people in globalized capitalism—to describe the present era. As a hopeful\, future-oriented alternative that invites humans to relate differently to energy and natural resources\, Saraceno devised Aerocene. This interdisciplinary and experimental movement convenes diverse artists\, activists\, geographers\, philosophers\, and doers to propose alternative ways of being and operating in the world. Within his studio practice Saraceno reimagines the notion of entangled air\, creating works that are made\, shaped\, maintained\, and moved by the air to inspire a more conscientious coexistence with the atmosphere. \nThis exhibition is organized with Dr. Somesh Roy\, assistant professor in Mechanical Engineering at Marquette University. Dr. Roy’s research attempts to unravel the mysteries of black carbon\, commonly known as soot. He operates within the field of combustion and aerosol science\, studying the formation of soot at an atomic level in combustion systems\, its dispersion at the atmospheric level\, and the perception and mitigation of its impacts on a personal and social level. Visit the exhibition’s interpretive space to learn more about Dr. Roy’s research\, as well as the participatory programming developed in conjunction with the exhibition. \nThis exhibition is curated by Emilia Layden\, Curator of Collections and Exhibitions\, and organized in partnership with Lynne Shumow\, Curator for Academic Engagement.
