SUMMARY:Community Day – Sidewalk Chalk Art Festival
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate artist Keith Haring’s birthday with a Sidewalk Chalk Art Festival at the Haggerty Museum of Art! Register for a sidewalk square today to create Haring-inspired chalk art around the Museum and on the campus of Marquette University. All are welcome to this FREE all-ages event \nRegister at: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/community-day-sidewalk-chalk-art-festival-tickets-274410929477 \nArt lovers of all ages will enjoy this opportunity to meet the Museum’s community partners and enjoy live music by Pay the Devil and performances arranged by Wanyah Frazier of WoLF Studios MKE. You’ll be able to indulge in tasty food of Twisted Plants vegan cuisine by Brandon and Arielle Hawthorne\, rich eccentric dishes from Africa and the Somali Bantu culture by Africa’s Finest Cuisine\, or heavenly comfort food by Bebe’s Bistro. \nThe festival is inspired by Keith Haring’s “Construction Fence”\, a 1983 gift to the Museum from the artist. During the 1980s\, Haring drew hundreds of chalk images on black paper that covered unused advertising spaces in New York City’s subway stations. These iconic images found their way into his graffiti murals that reside in major museums around the world. He is renowned for his commitment to community and public art that is mirrored in the Haggerty Museum of Art’s commitment to inclusivity and accessibility. More information about the creation of the Haggerty’s “Construction Fence” by Keith Haring can be found at the Google Arts & Culture site. https://bit.ly/haring-construction-fence \nSchedule: \n11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Create sidewalk chalk art with stencils (pick up materials at the Haggerty Museum of Art). \nnoon – 2:30 p.m. (with break at 1) Dance to live music from Pay the Devil inside the Museum! \n2:30 – 3:30 p.m. Enjoy Crisp Vocals & Eclectic Jazz; catch vocalist Tanya Reed at the Alumni Memorial Union (AMU). \n3 – 4 p.m. Vibe with Season 10 American Idol Contestant Felix Ramsey and his new EP “Grey Area” at the Alumni Memorial Union (AMU). \nIn tandem with the Sidewalk Chalk Art Festival\, Muskego Way Forward\, Sixteenth Street Community Health Centers and other neighborhood partners will use Keith Haring-inspired art to educate and empower residents to advocate for safer streets in the Muskego Way neighborhood. The event will take place May 7\, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Forest Home pocket park. \nAbout the Haggerty Museum of Art \nThe Haggerty Museum of Art at Marquette University is an innovative nexus of interdisciplinary learning where creativity\, intellect and social justice intersect. Located in the heart of the Near West Side\, adjacent to downtown Milwaukee\, and open daily\, the Museum is one of the most accessible arts venues in the city.
